#Oscars2020 International Feature Film Shortlist

Image
Yes, I'm back after traveling in such a busy time for cinema crowded awards season but it's impossible to say NO to Paris in Christmas and la CitĂ© de la Lumière was even more luisant.  Did followed the news so was aware of the shortlists announced on December 16 and here is the one that always has our attention now with 10 films instead of 9. This edition AMPAS accepted ninety-one films which in the Phase I of the voting the International Feature Film Committee will view all and vote by secret ballot.  The group's top seven choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy's International Feature Film Award Executive Committee, constitutes the shortlist of ten films. These 10 films are now subject to the voting Phase II where the International Feature Film Committee must view the ten shortlisted films and vote by secret ballot to determine the category's five nominees.  Just for your info the final voting for the award is restricted to active an...

45th Annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards

Image
Yesterday the so-called " most powerful " group of American voted their 2019 awards and unlike their east coast counterparts their top award went to Parasite which also collected best director and supporting actor plus was runner-up in two categories: screenplay and production design. This marks the second year in a row that L.A. critics have named a film not in the English language as their year's best, and the fifth time in their 45-year history with all of those wins happening in the last 20 years: Roma in 2018, Amour in 2012, Letters From Iwo Jima in 2006, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. Last year LAFCA and NYFCC coincided in naming their best film of 2018, which has happen only 13 times in 45 years), both named Roma; but, this year they didn't and the only categories they coincide is Best Actor to Antonio Banderas and Best Cinematography to Portrait of a Lady in Fire. What started with what many -including me- said was an unconventional choice it has ...

32nd European Film Awards Winners

Image
Last night the European Film Academy had their awards ceremony which was able to watch it live on TV.  Do know that the concept of entertainment in Europe is different to the one that prevails in USA and yesterday was clearly evident for me as the ceremony production values were not that bad but there is so much producers should learn as there were many moments that were so much NOT entertainment and showed they sort of amateurish status. Just as an example most presenters and award winners had no idea of what to do in the stage as a consequence on TV looked clumsy; but the most basic was unforgiving, NO presenter nor award winner should come down the stairs, NEVER, they should leave the stage by any side.  Worst was when camera was right in front of them, so basically they walk into the camera or so we watched on TV. German humor is very particular and not always is funny for other audiences, but for me was alright except for those moments when funny actors interfere with the...

2019 New York Film Critics Circle Award Winners

Image
Yesterday the first major critics group announced their annual winners for current edition and there is no clear trend after Gotham and NBR announcemnts as winners are very dispersed, except for Parasite in foreign-language and The Irishman in best film. Group is know for both honoring major Oscar players and also making unconventional and beloved choices; examples of the later is this year selecting Lupita Nyong'o for best actress or two-years ago selecting Tiffany Haddish for best supporting actress. Below there is a quite interesting group of honorees as for example last year among the winners there were only two foreign language films (Roma and Cold War) while this year there are six films and all except two (Portrait of a Lady on Fire and I Lost My Body) are submission to Oscars International Feature Film category; as well as, one (Honeyland) is also for consideration in the Oscars Documentary category and another (I Lost My Body) in the Animated Film category.  Group honored ...

2019 National Board of Review Awards

Image
Yesterday the NBR announced its winners and their choices gives us a brief sight into what current awards season could look like as we have to recall that the NBR is made up of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, academics and filmmakers which undoubtedly makes organization a quite interesting blend from all walks of life. The 2019 awards continue the NBR's tradition of recognizing excellence in filmmaking, going back 110 years.  This year 285 films were viewed by a select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals, academics, and students, many of which were followed by in-depth discussions with directors, actors, producers and screenwriters. Current edition top award went to what many pundits are calling the top movie of the year, which obviously does not reflect may opinion as The Irishman won Best Film.  NBR President Annie Schulhof said, " We are thrilled to award The Irishman as our Best Film-Martin Scorsese's masterful mob epic is a rich, moving, bea...

29th Annual IFP Gotham Awards Winners

Image
Last night, December 2nd, the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) announced the winners of the current edition of the annual Gotham Awards at a ceremony held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The awards ceremony had a live stream and today, December 3rd, there is a taped version still available which its included at the end of this post. The big winner of the night is a movie I'm looking forward to watch soon, very soon, as in a few days will be available on Netflix, Marriage Story.  Me, sincerely wish ALL great films could be available in any of the streaming services as where I live know there are not many cinemas and the few show mainly commercial movies.   By-the-way I'm not a Scorsese fan, his Leonardo Dicaprio movies are insufferable, his Daniel Day-Lewis films more watchable; so, no surprise to say that find The Irishman more on the insufferable side of the scale and yes, a bit boring (but not because length as have seen even longer but great movies).  What...

2019 British Independent Film Awards Winners

Image
The awards ceremony for the 22nd edition of the BIFA's was hosted by actress and comedian Aisling Bea and held at London's Old Billingsgate last night, December 1st. Cannes 2019 Documentary Golden Eye Award winner For Sama became top award winner by winning four main awards: Best British Independent Film, Best Documentary, Best Director, and Best Editing; it's the first time a documentary wins BIFA's top award. The Personal History of David Copperfield won five awards: Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design which makes film the most awards winner of this edition. Perhaps the most interesting win of the night is what many claim it's the first win on the road to an Oscar, as RenĂ©e Zellweger wins Best Actress for her performance in Judy .  Last year Olivia Colman started collecting honors at BIFA and many expect Zellweger to go the same route as Colman went.  Can help but to mention that there is another B...
