May 30, 2021 Update : some films have been eliminated from the selection and today post is updated to final selection. Most interesting news come from the TEDDY Foundation as will present the Special Teddy Award for outstanding achievement and long-term service to Jenni Olson, a figure from the creative industries whose work has made an exceptional contribution to a wide-scale public perception and reception of queer perspectives in art, culture and media. For more than a decade I have been following the work of Jenni Olson and believe if someone deserves recognition for his unparallel body of work is her as an outstanding film curator, archivist, filmmaker, writer and LGBT film historian. Congrats. The Teddy Jury 2021 was also announced with three filmmakers and festival organizers. Sylvie Cachinis, film director, Switzerland Samuel Girma, curator of film and art, Sweden Esma Akyelis, transfeminist activist, festival organizer, Turkey ---///--- 2/22/21 As orginazers say " Even a...

Ensayo de una Despedida by Agustina Comedi.  Futur Drei also won the Readers' Award and Welcome to Chechnya by David France the Activist Award. Jury statement for Best Feature Film Teddy. This year’s award for best feature is a politically disruptive portrait of a new generation. An extraordinary achievement for a director so early in his career, this film draws on contemporary issues and aesthetic trends to forecast not only the future of German cinema but of Germany itself. For best feature film, the jury has decided to award the certain to be iconic  Futur Drei (No Hard Feelings) directed by Faraz Shariat and the Jünglinge Collective. Jury Statement for Jury Award Teddy For its radical aesthetics, representative of a remarkable artistic journey and cinematic maturity; for construc...

70th Berlin Film Festival Award Winners

Image
Yes, this year's festival was different, as a summary let me share enthusiasm does not compensate for lack of substance and even do there were some really great films, most were not.  After checking what was going on for a couple of days, gave up and stopped trying to get exciting about a film festival that used to be one of the three greatest in the world. Sigh. In any case, there were exceptions but none as remarkable as the press conference for the documentary Hillary which strongly suggest you watch if you haven't seen it yet.  It's amazing how an educated person can clearly state thoughts and go to the point, especially when you compare him/her to actors, directors and filmmakers (lol).  Seriously, Hillary Clinton clearly and straight forwardly said very interesting things and doc became must be seen for me, immediately. On the positive note, social media absolutely improved and definitively became current; congrats to the new digital media team as presence was a l...

70th Berlin Film Festival Lineup

Yes, I am (or was?) a huge fan of this festival and highly enjoyed Dieter Kosslick's black humor and many of his official selections during the many years he was the festival's director.  This is the first festival without Dieter Kosslick and under the Executive Direction of Mariette Rissenbeek and the Artistic Direction of Carlo Chatrian.  My first spontaneous reaction is that festival looks and feels different as Competition lineup (which always is the main festival event) seems different perhaps less festival particular and more like other festivals. Time will say if my first impression is real or just my reaction to change.  Change does not come only at top levels as almost all sections have new heads.  So, no doubt the festival has gone a major overhaul.  Hope finds its own and different to the other 2 major film festivals niche as if not, will risk to go outside the major 3 and film festivals will have only 2 major participants until another grows to becom...

32nd European Film Awards Winners

Image
Last night the European Film Academy had their awards ceremony which was able to watch it live on TV.  Do know that the concept of entertainment in Europe is different to the one that prevails in USA and yesterday was clearly evident for me as the ceremony production values were not that bad but there is so much producers should learn as there were many moments that were so much NOT entertainment and showed they sort of amateurish status. Just as an example most presenters and award winners had no idea of what to do in the stage as a consequence on TV looked clumsy; but the most basic was unforgiving, NO presenter nor award winner should come down the stairs, NEVER, they should leave the stage by any side.  Worst was when camera was right in front of them, so basically they walk into the camera or so we watched on TV. German humor is very particular and not always is funny for other audiences, but for me was alright except for those moments when funny actors interfere with the...

69th Berlin International Film Festival Award Winners

Awards ceremony has been emotional because Dieter Kosslick tributes, homages and the spontaneous reaction of the ceremony audience. I will miss him as believe not many celebrities have what he does, HUGE charm with very-dark and very-dry humor, which simply LOVE it! The movie clips are always welcome and today are helping to focus more on the movies than on the departure of beloved festival director. My reactions to fest winners is, in general, as a whole have a traditional flavor, which in my book is just perfect.  Very glad that last Berlinale directed by Dieter Kosslick has been good and Juliette Binoche's hand is absolutely allover in top award winners, which is also perfect. Lapid, Ozon, and newcomer Fingscheidt won the one, two and three film awards at 2019 Berllinale.   Wait, wait a gift from the jury for DK a huge bear, lol.  Will also miss Anke as assume she'll be gone too.  Not afraid of change, change is good BUT has to be equal or better than what K...

At post bottom there is a video with the awards ceremony in full if you wish to see the show -more than the awards (lol)-. Top feature and documentary winners come from Latin American filmmakers, which makes it a great night for LGBT cinema of a region lately bringing outstanding films with queer relevant themes.  Congrats Latin American filmmakers and keep them coming.  Thanks. Winners are below in *BLUE .  To check films that got a "nominated" mention go to post with all festival winners here . ---///--- 1/30/19 As Berlinale program has been published in full, here are the films that will compete this year for the most famous LGBT film award. But first let's share that the Special Teddy Award goes to Falk Rickter and most interesting, for the first time the online magazine queer.de is going to be media partner of the Teddy Award and there is a diverse jury of five people to select the winner of the Teddy Readers' Award 2019. This year there is a nice poster with art...
