74th Festival de Cannes Award Winners

Image
Without a doubt, this was one of the best award ceremonies I have seen ever as made me laugh loud with a river of tears coming out of my eyes, (LOL). So funny!!! Yes, Spike Lee announced the Palm d'or winner right away before any other major awards!!! Some how made me recall the infamous Oscar moment when Waren Beatty announced the wrong Best Picture; but, Cannes is France and gee, felt so funny instead of embarrasing. Even the mistress of ceremonies lost control afterwards making the show even more fun to watch. Wish awards ceremonies were more like this one that those boring shows reading one award after another. This year the festival was strange and many speculated since the very beginning that surely the awards were going to be "strange"; some even went to say that this year chaos will reign. Seems they were somehow right. Top winner is very controversial film already screening in Paris to controversial critics' reviews. But I'm glad that finally a ...

60th Semaine de la Critique Award Winners

Will not deny that having the festival during a summer month is kind of strange as on top, there are many cinema-related events going on at the same time due to the pandemia; so, it's not easy to concentrate on only one thing no matter how big or important that thing could be.  Nevertheless time flies and amazingly yesterday took place the first awards ceremony of the 2021 Cannes festival. 53rd Quinzaine des Réalisateurs Selection

Image
Yesterday Paolo Moretti, artistic director, and his selection committee unveiled the selection of Directors' Fortnight's 2021 edition with 24 feature films, 1 special screening, 9 short films and 1 feature by 2021 Carrosse d'Or filmmaker. Before doing the list a few words about current edition poster. The image by photographer and filmmaker Daniel Mercadante, is part of his series "The Enchanted Forest" and was created through a process that combines long exposure photography, light projection and juxtaposition. The artist "paints" the trees with coloured light of handheld flashlights and using long exposure techniques, explores the temporal dimension that photography shares with cinema. The wide spectrum of colours reflects the richness and diversity of contemporary cinema which is, once again, the heart of the Director's selection. Very well-known documentarian Frederick Wiseman will be given the 2021 Carrosse d'Or handed out by the French D...

25th Prix Lumières Winners

Image
Updating post with winners. Les Misérables leads with three (3) awards followed closely by Portrait of a Lady on Fire with two (2). The ceremony was broadcasted for the first time on Canal + and Isabelle Huppert was the ceremony president and Isabelle Giordano was the mistress of the ceremony. Costa-Gavras had an special award for his contribution to worldwide cinema and Roberto Benigni was also honored.  There was a special celebration of the 25-years anniversary milestone with Vanessa Benelli Mosell playing a compilation of different films soundtracks. Today read in social media a comment that profoundly make me think about the state of French cinema when a first film is being honored with multiple nominations, including an Oscar, a Spirit Award and a Golden Globe, plus has won a top Lumière, a Goya for Best European film,  an EFA for European Discovery and more in film festivals, including Cannes Jury Prize.  No doubt is the new generation making social relevant cinem...

2019 L’Œil d’Or Winners

Image
In an unexpected finale the jury decided two top winners for this award that is too young to be giving ex-æquo awards. "The two films we have rewarded deal with love, exile, resistance and the you of disobeying together"  declared the jury. First L’Œil goes to a very strong and courageous debut film by a young woman.  A shock, terrifying violence of the images.  The story of a great love between a man and a woman, an open love letter to their child, the everyday life of a young heroic surgeon and his team in the hell of Syrian war.  For Sama by Waad Al Kateab. The second goes to a filmmaker who has been in exile for almost 50 years.  He has restlessly celebrated, through his body of work, the passionate momentum of Chilians in pursuit of liberty and social Justice.  La Cordillera de los Sueños by Patricio Guzmán. Winners are in *BLUE .  To check winners go official site here ; but, wait a few days until they update. ---///-- 5/11/19 2019 L’Œil d’Or ...

2019 Queer Palm Winners

Image
After all the highly positive noise and buzz generated by Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady On Fire is no surprise film won the LGBT award but deep inside me I was worry as usually top festival LGBT awards do not recognize lesbian interest film nor films made by a female director. So the big surprise is not that Queer Palm is honoring a lesbian interest film BUT that film is by a female director!!! It's the first time in Cannes and well, it hasn't happened that often in other top film festivals.  There is always an exception and, of course, it is the award from the Berlinale as the Teddy has gone several times to a female director telling lesbian interest stories but also, gay interest stories, sigh. The following is the jury statement in the original language it was said, French. Le film que nous avons choisi de récompenser pour cette 10 ème édition de la Queer Palm n’est pas seulement une histoire lesbienne mais, avant tout, un grand film de cinéma. Le jury a été fra...

The ACID program at Cannes International Film Festival was created in 1993. 51st Quinzaine des Réalisateurs Selection

Image
Yesterday organizers announced the selection to the pleasant surprise of many as includes many of the 2019 most expected films by extraordinary master filmmakers.  Great. Before getting into the list, a few words about the poster.  Both naturalistic and transfigured, photographer Robert Schlaug's picture evokes a road to travel as well as an acceleration, an eye movement.  Between realism and digital artifact, the artist's intervention disrupts codes and questions our perception, recalling the spirit of the films presented over the last 50 years bye de Directors' Fortnight. There are three Virtual Reality installations by Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang: called Go Where You Look! Falling Off Snow Mountain; the installation has three pieces Aloft, Chalkroom and To The Moon.  Both Aloft and Chalkroom are currently installed in MASS MoCA in North Adams Massachusetts. Under its Italian title “La Camera Insabbiata” it won the award for “Best VR Experience” at the Ve...

58th Semaine de la Critique Selection

Image
A few minutes ago organizers announced via social media the Festival de Cannes parallel section that always has unconventional films to say the least.  As of this moment the info is available only in French but imagine soon will be available in English. Update: all info is available in English too! The Poster Before diving into the selection will share info about the magnificent poster showcasing Félix Maritaud - winner of the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award - in a photo by Aurélie Lamachère in collaboration with les bons faiseurs agency. Shot during the blue hour, the actor is one with the disturbing love-hungry character he embodies in Sauvage, Camille Vidal-Naquet’s first feature, which competed in the 2018 edition of La Semaine de la Critique.  Félix Maritaud plays Léo with candid animalistic energy; almost graceful, he’s an angel haunted by his demons. The Jury Also interesting is this year jury president as is none other than Ciro Guerra, whom is a newcommer ...
