In the film category, the winners were writer André Aciman, author of Call Me by Your Name, and screenwriter-director James Ivory, who adapted Aciman’s work for the screen. In her welcoming remarks, USC Libraries Dean Catherine Quinlan paid tribute to the legacy of the Scripter Awards, “ Scripter is celebrating its 30th birthday, and whether it’s your first Scripter or your thirtieth, I am grateful to everyone who has supported this fine, enduring Trojan tradition. ” USC Provost Michael Quick hailed the importance of libraries. “ More than places where students have a space to learn and faculty have collections from which to launch their scholarship, libraries are the core for what we stand for in higher education ,” he said. 68th Berlinale Complete Lineup - Final

Image
Today post becomes final as have checked all films, feature and shorts, with those published in Berlinale official site to make the list accurate to what will happen at the festival in a few days. There are some interesting movies but no movie has call more my attention than the movie from Paraguay, the first one ever to compete for the Golden Bear, as I'm very curious to find why film called the attention of fest organizers, enough to place it in the main Competition.  Also is the one film that has clear lesbian interest and of course, becomes must-be-seen for me.  Let's hope film surprises many and maybe collects awards. According to available trailers and/or film stills, seems there are films that suggest to have awesome visuals which is usual among films in the Berlinale as well as the "strange" (weird) films especially in the Forum section.  Perhaps the most surprising is to find great directors in the Panorama and Forum sections and not in the Competion (competi...

23rd Prix Lumières Winners

Last night at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris, the International Press had their awards ceremony and believe there were no surprises as 120 battements par minute swept the awards by collecting six out of the six nominations, which indeed is a clean sweep! As expected, Jeanne Balibar won the Best Actress for her performance in Barbara and notabl, Visage, Villages won Best Documentary with the presence of Agnes Varda who said, she was in Paris for this event while JR was in Los Angeles for the Oscars Luncheon (yes, JR took Varda's full size cardboard to the Oscars to became the Toast of the event! - and Meryl Streep was amused and left her in a fit of giggles -lol-). Nevertheless, going back to this event, the ceremony opened with the short Au feu rouge by Mehdi Idir and Grand Corps Malade, which you can watch in the full ceremony video at bottom of this post. The group paid tribute this year to Jean-Paul Belmondo and Monica Bellucci, both of whom were in attendance, for thei...

32nd Goya Award Winners

Image
Last Saturday was the annual Goya awards gala and no, didn't watched live as was expecting what always happens, films I don't like win awards ... sigh. Well, this year I was wrong as out-of-the-blue the big winner of the night became a film I haven't seen but definitively will love to watch as I see everything by Isabel Coixet, especially when the male lead belongs to an actor I highly enjoy his performances, Bill Nighy. By-the-way, The Bookshop will have its international premiere at the 2018 Berlinale as a Special Gala. Yes, Isabel Coixet latest directorial master opus won top award and also two awards to Coixet for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay which undoubtedly was a surprise as no, film was not the big quantity winner as that title belongs to Handia (Giant) by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño that collected ten (10) awards (most were tech awards). One of the gala highlights was the several languages of Spanish cinema as The Bookshop is in English, Handia is in ...

8th Les Magritte du Cinéma Award Winners

Last Saturday was the annual awards ceremony of the award that honors Belgian cinema released during 2017 and a milestone event happened, as is the first time a film has 6 nominations and wins 6 awards.  The second film by Philippe Van Leeuw, Insyriated , won the top award and five more, including Best Director for Van Leeuw. Insyriated premiered at 2017 Berlinale in the Panorama section where won the Label Europa Cinemas award and the award that suggests audience acceptance, the first place in the Panorama Audience Awards.  Starring none other than one of my most favorite actresses, Hiam Abbass, tells the following story: The reality of life as a civilian in modern-day Damascus is explored in gripping and visceral detail.  Trapped inside her own home as the city around her is reduced to rubble, mother of three Oum Yazan (Hiam Abbass) takes comfort in the familiarity of household routines. The streets below are a war zone, with a barricaded doorway providing the only prot...

Last Saturday the guild had their awards ceremony with Judd Apatow as host and as many expected, Guillermo del Toro won the top award for his master work in The Shape of Water.  There is little doubt del Toro now becomes the Oscars frontrunner for both best director and best film categories, especially after a while back film also earned the PGA top award. For those that enjoy statistics, since the award inception 70 years ago, only in seven, yes only 7 occasions the guild top award winner didn't also won the directing Oscar.
